A Modern Day Shepherd’s Reply to the Nymph (Inspired by Christopher Marlowe & Sir Walter Raleigh)

April 7th, 2009

If things didn’t change and the time didn’t pass
Then how could you save the best for last?
Don’t things go stronger and better with time?
Then wouldn’t love go from simple to simply sublime?

When seasons change and rivers flow
Don’t things once young stronger grow?
All is not truth and sweetness always
Don’t winter storms return to spring days?

If seasons didn’t change and time didn’t go
Would winter never cease and flowers never grow?
Would cattle grow fat and the sheep wooly
Could men and women ever grow fully?

With time comes knowledge and age becomes wise
But the passing of youth and naivete lies
Leading to certainty and a confident mind
So isn’t it a necessity the passing of time?

With time doesn’t your fondness increase?
And after every storm isn’t there peace?
When the gifts are gone, withered and faded
Feelings remain and for nothing are they traded

The simplest love, kindness, and most true care
For these great things I lay my heart bare
At first it was your beauty that attracted
But for your personality I am asking

For my folly I do sincerely apologize
But I yearn for the tenderness I see in your eyes
With these things I wish to persuade you
And if you’ll have me a happy wife I’ll make you
